CNC Programming

D3 Engineering is a CNC programming expert

NC (Numerical Controlled) machine tools have been used for over fifty years for manufacturing. Before the NC era, tools that machined components have been controlled by hand, with levers, cams and hand wheels only. Today, machining tools are Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) and CNC programming – to program these milling machines’ operation – have become an engineering field of expertise. D3 Engineering Solutions offers CNC programming as one of their expert services.

Modern CNC interpreters support parametric programming (logical commands) that brought much more flexibility to CNC programming. This gives the programmer more freedom to perform arithmetic, manipulate variables and write sub-program calls, all within the same program. This meant that CNC machines could be programmed with logic, and several sizes of one product could be made this way; designs could be scaled to almost any size a customer could require. A lot of unnecessary duplication was eliminated and this technology has reduced development times substantially, especially in cases where components need to be scalable.

In line with the advancing technology, the cost of CNC has dropped to the point where it has become very cost-effective even for small-scale use on limited projects. Some very simple home systems have been designed too. In the meantime, the actual milling machine that machines the component has stayed largely the same, in line with well established mechanical engineering principles. As a matter of illustration: the wheel had already been invented, but the computer-aided intelligence behind it is only now finely honed.
