Design for Manufacture Specialist
The design process would be very simple if engineers could just design articles for their intended purpose, but in reality Design for Manufacture (DFM) plays a critical role. It would be of little use if a product were perfectly functional in theory and on the virtual drawing board, but is extremely difficult to manufacture easily and cheaply. D3 Engineering Solutions are Design for Manufacture experts; we design products to be both functional and easy to manufacture, saving the client money throughout the product value chain.
Products designed without due regard for DFM may suffer an unacceptable rejection rate at the manufacturing plant. Intricate, fragile parts, very close tolerances and difficult assembly all conspire to make a product comparatively useless in the real world, even if the functional design is sound. It means a lot of money is wasted elsewhere in the product cycle on the assembly time, through component failures or continuous adjustments, putting pressure on margins and reliability.
DFM techniques employed may depend on the material used to manufacture the product. Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) milling machines may be used to make many parts, like those made of relatively soft metals like brass, aluminium and magnesium; they may work less well on hard metals like titanium and stainless steel. On the other hand, materials that are too soft, like some plastics, are also difficult to machine.
